The Chief Directorate Population and Development researches and advises Government on population policy and planning and development issues; and builds capacity to integrate population issues into development strategies. The objective of the programme is to research, analyze and interpret population and development trends in order to inform policy-making and planning; monitor, evaluate and facilitate the implementation of the population policy through intergovernmental programmes and develop capacity to integrate population issues into development.
THEME: “Responding to the Economic Crisis: Investing in Women is a Smart Choice”
On the 10 July 2009, South Africa and the rest of the world will be observing and commemorating the 20th World Population Day. This year’s event will focus on the global economic meltdown which is affecting the poorest and most vulnerable especially around the reproductive health, economic and rights issues. The Department of Social Development, through the Chief Directorate Population and Development, in partnership with Ministry for Women, Youth Children and People with Disability, United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) and Population Association of South Africa (PASA) will commemorate theWorld Population Day at the University of Western Cape, Western Cape Province.

LEAD: The Population, Environment and Development Nexus
The Department of Social Development of the Republic of South Africa and Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) Southern Africa are collaborating to present international training sessions on the relationship between people, the environment and the development challenges facing Southern Africa and the world.
APSTAR is the Applied Population Sciences Training and Research Programme of the School of Development Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal. Its aim is to enhance the understanding of population issues in relation to the broader sphere of development challenges. It focuses on
how to integrate population factors into policies, strategies, programmes, projects and activities.
